The most visited Muslim shrine in India, Ajmer Sharif is located in Ajmer city near the holy town Pushkar. This city was built in the 7th century by Raja Ajaypal Chauhan. This holy medieval town houses the Dargah-E-Sharif (tomb) of Khawaja Moin-ud-din Chisty, a revered Sufi saint of the 12th century AD. Apart from the Dargah Sharif other attractions in Ajmer are Taragarh Fort, Anasagar Lake, Adhai-Din-Ka-Jhonpra, etc.

Dargah Sharif: Dargah Sharif of Ajmer is one of the most venerated shrines for the Muslims. It houses the mausoleum of the Sufi saint, Khwaja Moinuddin Chisty; pilgrims visit this shrine to seek blessings. This is the final resting place of the saint who died in 1235. The marble domes mausoleum is not only visited by Muslims, people of all religions visit this holy shrine. The sick and childless come to this holy place to seek blessings of the saint. It is said that inner wish is fulfilled when one visits this holy Dargah. The Mughal Emperor Akbar was gifted with a son after visiting this holy shrine. The annual Urs festival celebrated in the month of May is the best time period to visit for the pilgrims. The mosque located within the Dargah is built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.

Taragarh Fort: Taragarh Fort is one of the attractions of the city which was built by Ajaipal Chauhan, the founder of the city of Ajmer in the 7th century. It is perched on a hillock.

Adhai-Din-Ka-Jhonpra: The mosque, Adhai-Din-Ka-Jhonpra is located on the outskirts of Ajmer city. The Delhi Sultanate king, Alaudhin Khiliji built this mosque. The architecture of the mosque is of Indo-Islamic architecture. The main attractions are archways and pillars.

Best Time to Visit Ajmer Sharif: The annual Urs of Moinuddin Chishti is celebrated in May. This is sought after by Muslim pilgrims. Apart from this the winter is the best time to tour Ajmer.

How to Reach Ajmer Sharif:

By Air: Jaipur is the nearest airport to Ajmer which is about 130 kms away from Ajmer. There is regular bus and taxi service to Ajmer from Jaipur.

By Train: One can reach Ajmer by train from Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur and other some cities of India.

By Road: Ajmer can be reached from Delhi and other cities of Uttar Pradesh. Ajmer is well-linked to major cities of Rajasthan.
